July 2024 · 2 minute read

Lucretia Hughes, a conservative activist with the right-wing group Turning Point USA, testified during the hearing about her son’s death in 2016 at the hands of a convicted criminal using an illegally obtained pistol.

“It’s impossible to put into words how awful it is to bury a child.” “I ache for everybody and everyone who has done the same,” she expressed sorrow.

“My son’s death was caused by a terrible criminal and a justice system that failed to hold him accountable for his previously broken laws.”

“Gun control lobbyists and politicians claim their policies will save lives and reduce violence. Well, those policies did not save my son.”

Hughes argued against gun control measures, calling them “racist” and accusing proponents of being “delusional.”

Something needs to shift. Thoughts and prayers, as well as pleas for stricter gun laws, are insufficient. Why don’t you let me defend myself against evil? Don’t you believe I’m capable and trustworthy with a weapon? Do you think the second amendment does not apply to persons who resemble me?” Hughes, who is black, expressed his thoughts.

“Who and you who are asking for increased gun control are also calling for the police to be defunded?” Who is intended to keep us safe? We must prepare to be our own first responders in order to protect ourselves and our loved ones safe.”

St. Louis, New York, Chicago, Washington, and Atlanta are the most violent cities in the US.
