Indiana abortion bill 2022: Lawmakers meeting in special session to consider laws restricting access

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (WLS) — Indiana lawmakers are meeting in a special session Monday to consider a bill to ban nearly all abortion in the state.

Indiana Senate Republicans, plan to introduce a bill that will block most abortions in the state unless it’s to prevent a substantial permanent impairment of life or if the pregnancy resulted from rape or incest.

Dozens of protesters held a rally in Highland, Indiana Sunday. Many said people will die if Indiana state lawmakers place severe restrictions on abortion.

The Indiana Right to Life said the bill does not go far enough. The legislation does not affect access to the morning after pill or any other method of birth control.

As the debate begins in the Hoosier State, Indiana House Speaker Republican Todd Huston asked for both sides to be respectful towards each other.

‘I have confidence that this body will be the guideposts on how to have challenging and difficult conversations and it can be done in a very public way,” Speaker Huston said. “No matter what the outcome, lets show ourselves, our state and the country, how it should be done.”

The special legislative session is slated for two weeks. On Friday, the Indiana Senate will take a final vote on Friday.

Abortion-rights groups also gathered in Wicker Park on Sunday hoping their voices are heard as lawmakers meet for that special session.

“And then 50 years and they take away my health care,” abortion-rights advocate Heidi Endersen said. “My access to the health care that I need to stay alive. So no, I shouldn’t be out here. The older women out here should not be back protesting.”

“This legislation is not intended to end abortion in the state of Indiana,” Mike Fichter, president of Indiana Right To Life, said. “It is intended to facilitate abortions in Indiana based upon polling results and in complete disregard to voters who helped establish these Republican supermajorities.”
